How do we tell stories with the land?
Join a dawn-to-dusk creative writing workshop exploring the layered histories of Dungeness through experimental storytelling and co-creation.
Playwright Anders Lustgarten and wild storyteller Sophie Austin lead this 15-hour endurance-based creative process, drawing inspiration from the landscape and those who have lived and worked on the shore. Poetry, story, and performance will become tools for reimagining the past, present, and future of this extraordinary coastline.
Throughout the day we will learn about historical figures and events that have shaped this land, from the lighthouse keepers, artists, smugglers and poets, to the impacts of wars and climate change. As the day dawns and the sun tracks our progress, we will develop stories, songs and creative offerings dedicated to the land and its former and future inhabitants.
Together, we will:
- Walk the beaches and shifting terrain of Dungeness, responding to its history and atmosphere.
- Write, craft, and perform new narratives inspired by the land and those who have shaped it.
- Co-create a digital artwork documenting the stories, songs, and ideas that emerge from the shared experience
This event is for bold, open-minded creatives ready to experiment and collaborate. Over the course of the day, you must be prepared to physically and mentally immerse yourself in the environment – whatever the weather!
Lunch will be provided.
